Alan Bern

Senior Program Manager

Alan Bern is a Senior Project Manager at VitalPet splitting time between IT projects and assisting with hospital operations. Prior to joining VitalPet in the winter of 2015, Alan spent many years working in both human and animal hospitals. His previous positions include practice manager roles in two animal hospitals in the Houston area, as well as being the coordinator of VIP services and a Patient Advocate at one of the major trauma centers in the Texas Medical Center. Alan received his undergraduate degree in business management from Tulane University and his masters in Healthcare Administration from Texas Woman's University. At home, he and his wife have two kids and a Boston Terrier named Dabney.


Benjamin Thomas

President and Founder

Benjamin Thomas founded VitalPet in 2009. Benjamin began his career as a Project Engineer at Lockheed Martin (specifically, the NASA shuttle program), followed by Management & Strategy Consulting at Accenture. In addition, while living in New York, and just after building his first company in the hospitality industry, Benjamin served as an advisor to Goldman Sachs to grow their portfolio of companies in their real estate group. Benjamin was first exposed to the veterinary services market while working as a financial advisor to a west coast-based veterinary group that grew to nearly $80 million in revenue. A native Texan, Benjamin comes from a family of three generations of Texas medical doctors. His father pioneered a practice management system in the early 1980s to help family medicine practices run more efficiently. His grandfather, John F. Thomas, served as the chairman of the Texas Board of Medical Examiners. As a member of the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO), he is actively involved with the Gulf Coast Chapter. Benjamin, along with his wife and son, reside in Houston, Texas. Benjamin earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (with Honors) from Tulane University and a Masters degree in Management from Stanford Business School.


Caroline E Gray

Marketing Manager

Carly Gray is the Marketing Manager at VitalPet. Carly joined the VitalPet family in May 2016 with experience in data analysis, marketing research, content marketing and graphic design. She earned her B.A. from Baylor University in addition to degrees in Corporate Communication and History. Outside of work, Carly enjoys running, cheering for the Baylor Bears, and spending time with her dog, Luke.



Vice President of Acquisitions and General Counsel

Clint Vranian is a seasoned legal and business development leader within the veterinary industry with experience at all levels of the industry. Clint brings a track record of leveraging innovation and creativity to discover and grow opportunities within the Animal Heath space to VitalPet. Clint has represented multinational pharmaceutical and animal health companies for over 15 years, both in private practice and in general counsel roles within Novartis Animal Health and Elanco Animal Health. In these roles, he has led M&A, business development and commercial matters spanning all areas of the animal health industry. Most recently, Clint led the antitrust clearance and legal integration of Elanco Animal Health's North American region following its acquisition of Novartis Animal Health. A frequent speaker on issues facing the veterinary industry, Clint is passionate about the veterinary-client-patient relationship. In 2012, he was the sole industry participant representing this position at the Federal Trade Commission’s Pet Medications Workshop. Clint Vranian earned dual degrees in Philosophy and Classical Studies from Emory University and Henry College in 1994. He earned his JD from the University of Richmond in 1998, and his MBA from Duke University in 2010. Clint resides in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he spends his free time reading, running and spending as much time possible with his son and daughter.

Dorothy Tucker

Accounts Payable Manager

Dorothy Tucker is the Accounts Payable Manager at VitalPet. Previously, Dorothy was an Inventory Control Specialist. Dorothy has been in the Veterinary business for 26 years - the last seven of those with VitalPet. Dorothy’s pet family consists of two white boxers named Saya and Copper and a cat named Scruff.


Jason R Atkins

Accounting Manager

Jason Atkins comes to VitalPet as the Accounting Manager with over 15 years of accounting experience in a range of industries such as telecom, political consulting, public relations, environmental and safety consulting, hotel, and oil and gas. He worked for 4 years as a vet tech for two vet clinics outside of Austin. One was a mixed practice, the other was primarily an equine clinic. There was also a brief stint on the the island of St Kitts, with a dream to become a vet. For 10 years he was the coach of the University of Texas Polo Team. He still has horses and enjoys playing polo when he can. He and his wife also have a Shih T-huahua named Thor and a Weimaraner/Plott hound named Townes.


Jennifer L Marfleet

Accounting Manager

Jennifer Marfleet joined the VitalPet family as Accounting Manager in May 2016. Jennifer comes to VitalPet with over 15 years of Accounting and Finance experience in various industries, including Entertainment, Online Human Resources Training, and Oil and Gas Consulting. Jennifer has a B.A. from the University of Houston, a Certificate in Accounting from UCLA Extension, and is currently preparing for the CPA exam. When not studying or crunching numbers for VitalPet, Jennifer enjoys relaxing at home with her husband and their 4 rescue cats, volunteering in Houston's Theatre community, and traveling.


Leah C Thomas

Vice President of Strategic Growth

Leah is a seasoned executive responsible for leading organizations through all growth phases including start-up, turn-around, and acquisition. In various leadership roles, Leah has dedicated the bulk of her career to starting and growing organizations in the social enterprise and international development sectors. Most recently, Leah served as CEO and co-founder of mGood, a mobile tech platform to help social causes fundraise and share content over mobile channels. While at mGood, she executed a turn-around and business development strategy to stabilize the tech start-up, and to grow revenues 4X within 12 months. She developed investor pitch materials and led investor road shows, as well as recruited management and sales teams to run operations and increase growth respectively. Leah exited the company to a strategic acquirer for 20X revenue. Previously, Leah served as the Director and co-founder of NetGuarantee, a subsidiary of Malaria No More. NetGuarantee provided a structured finance vehicle enabling earlier delivery of life-saving mosquito bed-nets to Africa by securing future?payments to manufacturers. Her work helped to advert 200,000 malaria cases in Mozambique. Leah conceptualized and launched this innovative finance mechanism, and she raised over $1.5M from corporations and foundations to underwrite the organization's start-up costs. She built partnerships with global commercial insurers, multi-laterals, NGOs, and African governments to structure transactions. Prior to her time at NetGuarantee, Leah was with Dalberg Global Development Advisors as a Senior Consultant where she was responsible for growing the firm's Corporate and Access-to Finance business units. In addition, she was responsible for developing frameworks to encourage investment in Africa and measure returns on social impact investing. Leah also served as Senior Director of Global Product Development at AIG where she was responsible for originating and structuring new risk solutions for AIG's emerging market clients and leading the company's entry into the BOP (bottom of the pyramid) market segment with the launch of micro-insurance products in Southeast Asia and Africa. Leah previously worked as an Analyst at Accenture where she started her career. She is a Member of The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), and is the Board Chair of Healing Hands of Joy, an Ethiopian NGO. Leah holds a BA in International Economics from the University of St. Thomas, and she earned dual MBAs from Columbia University and London Business School.


Martin E Stanford

Vice President of Acquisitions and Vendor Relations

Marty Stanford joins VitalPet with over 20 years of business experience, primarily in the medical device and veterinary industries. He started his career managing territories for companies such as United States Surgical Corporation, Boston Scientific and ALARIS Medical Systems. Over time, his leadership roles grew substantially and he developed an expertise in business development, sales management and revenue acceleration. Most recently, Marty was the Director of Sales and Marketing for AViD Laboratories, a private veterinary reference laboratory which sold to IDEXX Laboratories in October of 2015. His time there allowed him to develop a solid business acumen within the veterinary industry as well as key relationships with many veterinary hospitals throughout the southeast. Marty is a 1993 graduate of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, with a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration. He has been married to his lovely wife, Marcie, for over 20 years and has two children: Brooke and Ty.


Michael Albert

Acquisitions and Integration Associate

Michael Albert is a Acquisitions & Integration Associate at VitalPet focusing on pre-acquisition valuations of Animal Hospitals as well as post-acquisition integration. He also participates in the corporate budgeting process and conducts financial analysis for management. Prior to joining VitalPet in the spring of 2016, Michael worked in corporate finance for a management consulting firm. He received his undergraduate degree in finance from Indiana University and his masters in finance from Loyola University Chicago.


Pamelar D Hale

Executive Vice President of Operations

Dr. Pam Hale graduated from Tuskegee University in 1986, where she received her Animal Science and Doctor of Veterinary degree. She brings over 30 years of veterinary experience to VitalPet, with most of those years in high-level leadership and management roles. Dr. Hale practiced for nine years in Knoxville, Tennessee, as an associate before joining PetSmart Veterinary Services in 1995. From her role as an associate there, she was promoted to Chief of Staff in 1996. After being appointed as the Regional Medical Director in 1997, Dr. Hale expanded PetSmart Veterinary Services into Michigan. PetSmart Veterinary Services was incorporated into VetSmart in 1999, and Dr. Hale continued in a financial and medical leadership role as the Field Director for Georgia. She was the Medical Director for as many as 70 hospitals. Within VetSmart/Banfield, she was promoted to Regional Medical Director of the East Region, which encompassed over 200 hospitals and eight medical directors. In 2009, Dr. Hale joined National Veterinary Associates as a Division Director with responsibility for Texas, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Georgia. She became the Senior Division Director for the East Coast in 2011, with 90 hospitals and several management direct reports. In 2014, Dr. Hale moved to the animal humane world when she took on the role of Vice President of Medical Operations with the Arizona Humane Society of Phoenix. Her role required her to oversee all public and shelter services along with the Emergency Animal Medical Team. During her time there, the Arizona Humane Society performed over 18,000 surgeries annually and operated the "Second Chance" surgical trauma unit for stray animals. In October 2014, Dr. Hale completed her MBA. When she’s not working, she enjoys reading, modern jazz, and traveling the globe. She models professionally for print and commercial media. Dr. Hale is married to Chuck, a U.S. Air Force veteran. They share their home with three dogs – "JAK," "Mz. Pink," and "Trinity Tuxedo Gumdrop."


Paula A Hawkins


Paula Hawkins is a finance professional bringing 30 years of diverse experience to the VitalPet team. Paula holds dual designations as a Certified Public Accountant and Chartered Global Management Accountant. She is an active member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Texas Society of CPAs. Most recently, Paula was Director of Finance for Catalyst and Chemical Containers, an international division of Brambles Industries. In this role, Paula developed the finance team, streamlined processes, and consistently improved the quality of financial reporting. She collaborated with Information Technology to improve reporting, led her team through two system implementations and was awarded the Circle of Excellence for her contributions. Paula successfully transitioned daily accounting functions to India, and maintained a core team to oversee all finance functions. In her previous role, Paula led the finance acquisition support team of Service Corporation International, overseeing financial integration of newly acquired businesses. Paula’s team supported multiple transactions per week and during her tenure, she completed the integration of 175 acquisitions. Paula began her career as an auditor for KPMG in Houston, Texas, and later worked as a financial analyst for IBM Europe in Paris, France. Upon returning stateside, she gained invaluable experience working in Washington, DC-based CPA firms, where she provided business consulting, tax compliance and auditing services for clients engaged in a variety of industries. A native Texan, Paula grew up in Baytown, Texas, where her father served as chief scientific advisor for Exxon Research and Engineering. Returning to her roots, Paula currently resides in Baytown, Texas with her husband, Jeff, a former U.S. diplomat, and her daughter, Leigh Anne, born in Hunan, China. Paula, Jeff and Leigh Anne share their home with an adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, named "Ellery Queen." Paula graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston and holds dual degrees in Accountancy and English Literature.


Peninah H Wangui

Staff Acountant

Peninah Wangui (Penny) is a native of Kenya and has been in the United States for over 15 years with frequent visits back home. She joined the VitalPet Family as a Staff Accountant/Payroll Administrator in the Summer of 2015. Penny comes to VitalPet with over 10 years of experience in various industries including public accounting, non-governmental accounting and the medical field. Penny attained her BBA in accounting from Bauer Business School, University of Houston and is currently pursing her MBA in Finance from University of Houston. During her free time, Penny enjoys spending time with 3 boys, traveling and volunteering at the Neighboor Hood Centers of Houston


Sandy Gomez

Office Coordinator

Sandy Gomez joined VitalPet in January 2015 as Office Coordinator and Benefit Administrator. Sandy is studying to become a Business Management Specialist. She has two rescued dogs.


Sinisa A Iliskovic

Executive Vice President of Technology and Marketing

Sinisa Aleksandar Iliskovic comes with 30 years of Technology and Corporate experiences from entrepreneurial to large corporate roles and positions. Sinisa had served in the roles of CEO, CIO, CTO, for many enterprises he owned and partnered with and in the senior management, chief architect and advisory roles for the companies he consulted and worked for. Sinisa believes that identifying problems is a key executive skill, but true leaders make their mark by giving their power and energy to solutions. As a respected global executive with 30 years of experience leading high-value technology initiatives to drive business growth across multiple disciplines, Sinisa had provide solutions that propel outstanding performance in complex, high-tech environments, delivering significant business results in operating performance, product portfolio offerings, and market value. Long Term companies Sinisa was a part of as an employee or advisor over the years were Oracle, British Petroleum, Exxon, Williams, Halliburton, GE, Schlumberger, Ecolab, Dynegy, AIG, Sumitomo to name some of them in the roles of managerial and technical leadership nature. Sinisa’s work immediately prior to joining was on the efforts to lead, architect, recruit resources for, create supporting going forward corporate structure and create a global cloud based web solution post Deep Horizon incident to capture engineering jobs, data and workflows for auditing, legal and engineering purpose to increase corporate image and presence of Halliburton and limit their liability and exposure to any business related challenges. Sinisa holds B.Sc. in E.E from University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, M.Sc. in E.E. from University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, MBA from Edinburgh Business School at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom and Ph.D. in Comp. Eng. in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Mining from University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.
